What impact has the NWTF made in North Carolina?

The NWTF has been a leading force for wildlife conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage in North Carolina. Every chapter banquet directly fuels that mission — funds raised through membership and ticket sales support habitat projects, hunter education, and conservation programs that keep our wild turkey populations thriving for generations to come. Your attendance makes all the difference.

Through strategic habitat management, prescribed fire programs, and land stewardship partnerships, the NWTF has positively impacted 66,893 acres across North Carolina. These efforts directly improve nesting and brooding habitat for wild turkey populations, while supporting the broader ecosystem health that sustains hunters, wildlife, and future generations.

The NWTF's membership in North Carolina represents a passionate community of hunters, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts united by a common mission. With 8,430 adult members and 812 JAKES members, each individual plays a vital role in funding habitat projects, advocating for hunting rights, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of conservation.

The purpose of this 10-year initiative is to improve wild turkey nesting and brood-rearing habitat at a landscape scale in the Southeastern states through active management of over 1 million acres by 2033. This will ultimately lead to more robust wild turkey populations and healthier ecosystems across the Southeast.

Other Notable North Carolina Achievements

Funding $105,571.98

Prescribed Fire Support to Wildlife Resources Commission

The state contributed $105,571.98 from the Super Fund to the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission to support prescribed fire application on more than 30,000 acres in the northern and southern piedmont, central coast and southern coast regions.

Funding $50,000.00

Endowed Professorship Commitment

The state committed $50,000 to support the NWTF Endowed Professorships for wild turkey research.

Conservation $14,854.50

Nesting and Brooding Area Establishment

The state contributed $14,854.50 from the Super Fund to the Wildlife Resource Commission to establish 9.5 acres in the southern coast region and 14 acres in the northern coast region of new nesting and brooding areas through native warm-season grass and pollinator establishment.

New NWTF Chapters Established

New NWTF chapters were established in Duplin, Johnston, Avery and Macon counties, and at East Carolina University.

Outreach

Gray Ghost Gobblers and Surry Longspurs Outreach

The Rowan County Gray Ghost Gobblers held their 23rd annual JAKES event with over 60 kids attending. The Surry Longspurs Chapter held five outreach events in 2025, including JAKES hunts, Wheelin' Sportsmen hunts and a catfish round-up.
