What impact has the NWTF made in Oklahoma?

The NWTF has been a leading force for wildlife conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage in Oklahoma. Every chapter banquet directly fuels that mission — funds raised through membership and ticket sales support habitat projects, hunter education, and conservation programs that keep our wild turkey populations thriving for generations to come. Your attendance makes all the difference.

Through strategic habitat management, prescribed fire programs, and land stewardship partnerships, the NWTF has positively impacted 4,622 acres across Oklahoma. These efforts directly improve nesting and brooding habitat for wild turkey populations, while supporting the broader ecosystem health that sustains hunters, wildlife, and future generations.

The NWTF's membership in Oklahoma represents a passionate community of hunters, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts united by a common mission. With 2,870 adult members and 173 JAKES members, each individual plays a vital role in funding habitat projects, advocating for hunting rights, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of conservation.

The Waterways for Wildlife Initiative is a comprehensive, landscape-level effort developed by the National Wild Turkey Federation to address critically urgent conservation needs in riparian ecosystems along rivers and streams in the Great Plains of the United States.

Other Notable Oklahoma Achievements

Conservation

Riparian Habitat Projects on Beaver River, Lexington and Canton WMAs

NWTF and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation completed Waterways for Wildlife projects on Beaver River WMA, Lexington WMA and Canton WMA, enhancing 381 acres of riparian habitat along almost 15 stream miles, with eastern red cedar removal and mechanical mulching of dense woody understory.

Initiative Support $124,500.00

Statewide Waterways for Wildlife Impact Since 2022

Since 2022, NWTF has impacted 3,300 acres in Oklahoma through the Waterways for Wildlife Initiative, awarding $124,500 with over $370,000 in partner match.

Conservation

Cherokee WMA Access and Okmulgee GMA Herbicide Project

NWTF and the ODWC completed a daylighting project along more than 8 miles of roads and firebreaks on Cherokee WMA, improving access and creating conditions to safely conduct prescribed burns. NWTF and ODWC also completed a 70-acre aerial herbicide project on Okmulgee GMA to remove invasive species and improve habitat for wild turkeys and other wildlife.

Funding

ODWC Law Enforcement ATV Support

NWTF supported ODWC law enforcement in the purchase of an ATV for use in the Second District, Ozark Region of Oklahoma. This gives game wardens better access to remote areas that patrol vehicles cannot reach and strengthens enforcement of wild turkey hunting regulations.

Outreach $10,000.00

Scholastic Shooting Sports and Varsity Archery Sponsorship

The Oklahoma State Chapter dedicated $10,000 to sponsoring the Oklahoma Scholastic Shooting Sports program and the varsity archery program.

Annual Squirrel Fest at Sequoyah State Park

The Oklahoma State Chapter held its annual squirrel fest at Sequoyah State Park in January. The event doubled in size from last year with over 60 attendees who enjoyed a wild game meal and squirrel hunting.
