The NWTF has been a leading force for wildlife conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage in Nebraska. Every chapter banquet directly fuels that mission — funds raised through membership and ticket sales support habitat projects, hunter education, and conservation programs that keep our wild turkey populations thriving for generations to come. Your attendance makes all the difference.

Through strategic habitat management, prescribed fire programs, and land stewardship partnerships, the NWTF has positively impacted 18,171 acres across Nebraska. These efforts directly improve nesting and brooding habitat for wild turkey populations, while supporting the broader ecosystem health that sustains hunters, wildlife, and future generations.

The NWTF's membership in Nebraska represents a passionate community of hunters, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts united by a common mission. With 2,116 adult members and 297 JAKES members, each individual plays a vital role in funding habitat projects, advocating for hunting rights, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of conservation.

The Waterways for Wildlife Initiative is a comprehensive, landscape-level effort developed by the National Wild Turkey Federation to address critically urgent conservation needs in riparian ecosystems along rivers and streams in the Great Plains of the United States.

Initiative Support

Waterways for Wildlife Investment

The Nebraska State Chapter invested in NWTF's Waterways for Wildlife Initiative, which has already impacted 1,370 acres across the state since 2022. Through an investment of $1.5 million with partners, projects have focused on removing invasive species such as eastern red cedar, salt cedar and Russian olive, while also supporting other projects to revitalize Nebraska's riparian ecosystems.

Western Nebraska Wild Turkey Monitoring

Researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and NWTF completed the third and final year of fieldwork in monitoring wild turkeys in western Nebraska. This investigation will yield information to optimize the management of turkeys in Nebraska.

Conservation

Bassway Strip WMA Riparian Enhancement

The NWTF partnered with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to enhance 16 acres of riparian habitat on Bassway Strip WMA by removing eastern red cedars and other woody species. This work opens the canopy to allow native grasses and forbs to flourish, restoring riparian function while improving nesting and brooding habitat for wild turkeys.

Omaha Longbeards WITO Weekend

The Omaha Longbeards Women in the Outdoors Chapter marked 25 years of hosting its annual women’s weekend, consistently engaging an average of 55 members each year through hands-on classes that enhance outdoor skills, knowledge and community.

Mock Turkey Hunt Education Event

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission provided resources and equipment to strengthen education and outreach efforts throughout the year. A highlight event was hosting a mock turkey hunt at a state park during the Women’s Hunter Education Weekend.
