What impact has the NWTF made in South Dakota?

The NWTF has been a leading force for wildlife conservation and the preservation of our hunting heritage in South Dakota. Every chapter banquet directly fuels that mission — funds raised through membership and ticket sales support habitat projects, hunter education, and conservation programs that keep our wild turkey populations thriving for generations to come. Your attendance makes all the difference.

Through strategic habitat management, prescribed fire programs, and land stewardship partnerships, the NWTF has positively impacted 6,864 acres across South Dakota. These efforts directly improve nesting and brooding habitat for wild turkey populations, while supporting the broader ecosystem health that sustains hunters, wildlife, and future generations.

The NWTF's membership in South Dakota represents a passionate community of hunters, conservationists, and outdoor enthusiasts united by a common mission. With 2,111 adult members and 1,325 JAKES members, each individual plays a vital role in funding habitat projects, advocating for hunting rights, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of conservation.

The Waterways for Wildlife Initiative is a comprehensive, landscape-level effort developed by the National Wild Turkey Federation to address critically urgent conservation needs in riparian ecosystems along rivers and streams in the Great Plains of the United States.

Virtual Fencing Program Partnership

South Dakota NWTF partnered with the USDA Forest Service on a virtual fencing program that will reduce the need for fencing that can restrict wildlife movements while allowing producers to more precisely and efficiently manage grazing near critical riparian areas.

Conservation

Black Hills Forester and Watershed Coalition Work

The NWTF's Black Hills forester works with landowners, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks to design and implement forestry best management practices. NWTF staff also sit on the Black Hills Area Watershed Coalition to help coordinate conservation priorities in the Black Hills.

For nearly 40 years, the South Dakota State Chapter has provided funding toward the Wildlife Federation's Conservation Camp for youth across the state.
